Meeting the Morels
A description and history of ?The Bottoms? which succeeded ?Hell Row? opens the Prose. It moves on to a description of Mrs. Morel?s house and the feelings of superiority she possess (3rd page). The preparations for the fair which she is taking her children to precedes the fair scene where a hint of Oedipus complex is seen (?For no other woman looked such a lady as she did pg.5). She believes that her husband goes to the bar after speaking to her neighbor. The unease of her pregnancy is aired. Mr. Morel?s is revealed; he is a drunk and a bad husband. A reflection on Mrs. Morel family history and past precedes the contrast which her husband emphasizes in the present though his past with his is pleasurable. After their marriage problems begin after a year; first the restlessness, then the discovery of his unpaid bills which unearths the poverty of Mr. Morel and deception. Information is divulged about her husband regarding different aspects. Oedipus complex is shown. She does loathes her husband after he cuts William?s hair is where the relationship changes. Mrs. Model?s perception of her husband, children and life is spoken about. The chapter ends with a big argument between Mr. and Mrs. Morel which results in her being locked out for a few hours.
