Humour is vital in comedy.

Humour is vital in any Comedy. Though Dogberry and his constables play a minor role in Much Ado nothing there presence is vital. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Humour is vital in any comedy. Much Ado About Nothing has some form of humour. Though comedy. Comedy is defined as a funny play or TV show that has a happy ending while humour is defined as the quality of being funny.
Much Ado About Nothing is about Beatrice and Benedick two very witty people who happen to dislike each other for reasons unknown. Their family and friends see what they do not, the love that they both share. They therefore set out to try and bring them together. These two characters are seen as the main characters that provide some humour to the play. Their witty comments and constant bickering provides amusement. Beatrice?s cousin, Hero, falls in love with soldier, Claudio. Hero though becomes part of a conspiracy unknowing to everyone excluding Don John and Borachio. Don John wishes to cause misery, as the bastard child he constantly makes mischief by ruining persons lives such as Hero when he Claudio and Don Pedro to look at Hero?s bedroom where she was supposed to be with another gentle man. All this caused Claudio to object to marrying Hero causing more despair in the play.
I agree that though Dogberry and his constables play an important role in Much Ado About Nothing there presence is vital. Dogberry and his constables play minor roles in the play; there characters though are important in the play. Dogberry and the others are the comic relief in the play, without them the play would be considered a tragedy. The play itself is quite tragic due to the events that take place due to misunderstandings or deceit throughout the play. A tragedy is a serious play with a bad ending. Dogberry and his officers help in resolving the issues in the play giving the play a happy ending as opposed to the sad ending that would have happened if they had not been so dim-witted and silly. The officers who appear less than sensible help to reveal the truth about Don John?s deceit, his plan to have Hero appear that she was the one in the room with the gentleman on the eve of her wedding.
Humour is vital in a comedy because they inter-relate. Without humour there would be no comedy because as stated earlier comedy can be a funny play while humour is the quality of being funny. Humour though is subject to different interpretations. Persons have different perceptions of humour a persons sense of humour can be influences by personality, environment? thus making the ?humerous? sections of the play subject to  the readers perception.
Humour is vital in any comedy because it lightens the mood in the play. The scene where Dogberry and verges are talking to the other officers is humorous to an extent in comparison to the other events that took place before which were tragic such as Claudio accusing Hero of infidelity and embarrassing her at their wedding. The scene with Dogberry and Verges lightens the mood after that because the officers stupidity is seen as humorous after reading the wedding scene.
