Much ado about nothing study questions.

Introduction

  1. Shakespeare wrote Much Ado About Nothing in between1598 and 1598.  During this time Shakespeare was advancing in his career by writing for his acting company, he contributed in the building of the Globe theatre, he was also recognised as a great dramatist and his popular plays were printed at the time. Three other romantic comedies that are associated with this play are Merchant of Venice, As You Like It, and Twelfth Night.

  1. Three basic plot lines for the play are Claudio and Hero perfect relationship which becomes complicated by deceit. Dogberry a policeman who is humorous due to his naïve stupidity, he becomes the hero of the play because he arrests the villains though he himself is not certain of the crime. Beatrice and Benedick love hate relationship, they start off as rivals who then fall in love with the help of their friends. The 16th century source that would have supplied the inspiration for Beatrice?s and Bennedick?s characters are Love?s Labors Lost and Taming of the Shrew (Shakespeare?s previous plays) an the culture of having a couple who constantly bickers and then falls in love.

  1. Examples of battling lovers from my culture are Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn and Moonlighting, with Sibyl Shepherd and Bruce Willis.

  1. The relationship between Claudio and Hero and Beatrice and Bennedick differ because Claudio and Hero have a good relationship in the beginning they are a perfect match but when he accuses her of infidelity the relationship deteriorates while Beatrice and Bennedick are the contrary. Beatrice and Bennedick bicker in the beginning and start falling in love when Claudio and Hero?s relationship has ended. In the end both couples are able to have a happy ending. Both relationships relate

  1. The form of language that is written is unusual for a romantic comedy because it is normally written in verse as opposed to it being written in prose. The play is written this way because prose reflects the anti-romantic attitudes of the main characters. Beatrice and Bennedick are not the cliché couple  they go against the expectations of society.
