Brother Man Assignment
Narrative techniques that Roger Mais uses are characterisation, biblical allusion, foreshadowing, flashback, imagery and point-of-view.
He develops characterisation by using foreshadowing, flashback and point-of-view. He has us sympathize with the character or hate the character by showing the problems that they face or faced which may have caused them to be the way they are he also gives us an image of their neighbourhood and the situations they have to deal with.
The setting is Kingston Jamaica in the late 1950's.
Some of the themes are
revenge
abuse
greed
jealousy
betrayal
poverty
superstition/obeah
religion
love.
The main plots in Brother Man are the development of Girlie and Papacita's relationship, Minette and Brother Man's relationship, Cordelia's life and Jesmina as she deals with taking care of Cordelia and keeping her relationship with Shine.
Girlie and Papacita have a dysfunctional relationship where he continuously abuses her when he wants to have sex but this is only seen as foreplay. He abuses Girlie physically otherwise when he thinks that she has gone to far with her cursing which leads to him getting injured after which he leaves Girlie shortly after. Papcita's selfishness causes him to become the main antagonist of the story.
Brother Man and Minette have a father daughter relationship. Minette though does not view brother man in that way she prefers for her to be his mistress but he is not interested in her in that way. So most of Brother Man and Minette's interaction which each other is centered around Minette trying to seduce Brother Man.
Cordelia another antagonist in the story has many problems throughout the story. At first we are led to believe that she is unfortunate and dependant on her sister due to the fact that her husband being incarcerated for possession of ganga. As the story unfolds we see another side of her. She begins to get involved in obeah, because her son is sick, which seems to bring with it her new found personality. We are able to see her transformation from a quiet person with worries to a person who is mentally unstable and the opinion that hr son is now a demon.
Jesmina a quiet individual who is stuck taking care of her sister after her brother-in-law is sent to jail for possession of ganga. She is in a relationship with Shine who she lover very much. She desires to start a future with him but us discouraged by both her sister and her friend. She deals with maintaining a relationship with Shine and taking care of er sister who later on becomes paranoid and starts affecting Jesmina's life because she wants her to always take care of her.
Foreshadowing is being displayed in the book through Bra Ambo and Brother Man conversation early in the book where Bra Ambo asks Brother Man to store some of his voodoo items due to the fact that he is being investigated by the police. It leaves us to the conclusion that Bra Ambo will develop a strong dislike for Brother Man. Girlie and Papacita's relationship is abusive and dysfunctional. His constant affairs and
selfish behaviour foretells Papacita's bad luck.
Example of foreshadowing is Girlie getting back at Papacita.
Examples of flashback are Minette looking back at where she was before she met Brother Man as well as Brother Man writing a memoir which gives us a description of his change from John Power to Brother Man.
Religion plays a major role in Brother Man because it relates to the narrative technique of biblical allusion. Brother Man is constantly portrayed as a Christ-like figure. It is such a significant part of the book that we even see Brother Man with the crown of thorns on his head on the book cover which is symbolic because Jesus wore a crown of thorns when he was being crucified. Brother Man performs a number of miracles which represent the miracles performed.by Jesus himself for example when someone touched part of Brother Man's clothes and was instantly healed it is replica of a bible story where a woman touched the hem of Jesus' garment and was healed. Brother Man is seen as the only person who is pure and the protagonist of the story.
