Umaisha wins Literary Journalist of the Year Award (report)


Literary Page Editor of New Nigerian Weekly, Malam Sumaila Umaisha, has won the 2007 ANA/Anyiam-Osigwe Literary Journalist of the Year Award.
This was announced at the 26th International Convention of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), which took place last weekend in Owerri, Imo State.
According to the panel of judges, Umaisha emerged winner out of 12 entrants from various Nigerian newspapers because of the scope and quality of his works published in his column, ?The Write Stuff?. In the words of the judges, "The clincher of this year?s prize leads other entrants not only in fielding the highest number of categories of well-written articles but also for displaying sound critical judgment in assessing the works of other writers, high intellectual acumen at conducting interviews, deep insight and lucidity in reportage and great promise in creative writing."
Umaisha, who also won the maiden edition of the prize in 2004 and received a merit award from the Kano State chapter of ANA in 2002, has held a number of positions in writers? bodies. He was National Publicity Secretary of ANA and Chairman of the Kaduna State chapter of the association.
He has produced works in poetry, prose and drama, including a collection of short stories, The Last Hiding Place, and a poetry collection, hell@heavensgate.
Umaisha began his journalism career with the Kaduna-based News Magazine, Hotline, as Associate Editor and later rose to the post of Deputy Editor. He moved to the New Nigerian Newspaper Limited in 1997.
