The Write Stuff bags Media Merit Award

The Write Sutff, the weekly literary column edited by Sumaila Umaisha in the New Nigerian Weekly, has once again brought garlands to the stable of New Nigerian Newspapers when it was conferred with a Media Merit Award for sustained excellence. The award was conferred on it by the Kaduna State chapter of Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA, at the chapter?s 2nd Annual October Lecture, which took place on 25th October, 2008.

The event, which was organised by the association in conjunction with the Kaduna Writers? League, KWL, took place at the Faculty of Science Auditorium, Kaduna State University, Kaduna.

In the citation read at the occasion, the association said the award was conferred on the column because of its consistent efforts at promoting literature. It noted that the column has been doing well since it was founded in 1997. "As a voice for writers the column has done creditably well, as a result of which its editor, Malam Sumaila Umaisha, has won a number of awards including ANA?s Literary Journalist of the Year Award in 2004 and 2007."

The association noted the vital role played by the editor of New Nigerian Weekly, Malam Ibrahim Auduson, in ensuring that the column succeeds in its efforts at promoting writers and literature. According to the association, "the editor?s interest and expertise in literary matters has gone a long way in making the column one of the best in Nigeria".

It also noted the commitment of the management of the New Nigerian Newspapers to the promotion of the arts, saying, "the management has tried its best in providing the enabling environment for the column to achieve its objectives".

Other recipients of the award are Ibrahim Sheme, award-winning writer and editor of Leadership newspapers, Book Stand, a literary column in the Newspapge newspaper, Mrs. Gyeyock A. J. Kore, Director of Kaduna State Library Board, AIT (Africa Independent Television) and Col. J.I.P Ubah, poet and former Military Administrator of Kebbi State.
Speaking on behalf of the recipients, Mr. Benjamin Ubiri, editor of Book Stand, expressed gratitude to ANA for the award and pledged that the recipients will continue to put in their best for the promotion of literature.

Earlier in his welcome speech, the chairman of the Kaduna ANA, Mr. Friday John Abba, said the award was in fulfillment of the association?s commitment to encouraging individuals and organisations that have excelled in promoting the arts to do more for the betterment of the Nigerian society and world at large.

The event, themed Child Trafficking and Abuse: Phases, Perspectives, Solutions, had in attendance students, writers and lecturers, including Mrs. Christiana Kantiok, the guest speaker, who spoke on the causes and solutions to child trafficking.
